Aquaponics:

What are Aquaponics?
Aquaponics are the creation of a cycle of in which the waste produced by fish fertilizes plants grown hydroponically, which in turn filter the water, making it clean for the fish. The food you could be eating from an aquaponic system is fresher and more sustainable for the environment. As an added bonus for consumers, a filet can provide up to 18g of protein and 90mg of Omega-3 which is an essential dietary requirement.
1) Tilapia, eat, and then  create ammonia (waste)
3) The dirty water then fertilizes the plants
2) The waste from the tilapia is filtered and then siphoned up to the planter
4) The plants filter out the dirty water, cleaning it and redistributing it to the fish

In Short:

The water from the tank is transported by gravity through a gravel bed where bacteria break down toxic ammonia and change it to Nitrogen. The plants are on the receiving end of the water, to grow any sort of vegetable. Lastly the water is pumped back to the fish tank to complete the process.
